What is CCBA Recertification?
The Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA®) credential, issued by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA®), is a globally recognized certification that validates the skills, knowledge, and experience of practicing business analysts. Like most professional certifications, it requires periodic renewal to ensure that credential holders remain current with evolving practices, tools, and industry standards
CCBA is valid for three years from the date of certification. Recertification is the process of demonstrating ongoing professional development through Continuing Development Units (CDUs) — keeping your credential active and your skills sharp.

If your CCBA credential expires, you have a one-year grace period to record any outstanding CDUs and complete the recertification process. If you fail to recertify within this period, you must reapply and retake the full examination.
Benefits of Recertifying Your CCBA
Recertification is far more than administrative housekeeping. It signals to employers, clients, and peers that you are an active, evolving professional — not someone who rested on past achievements.
Sustained Career Advantage
CCBA holders stay competitive and strengthen their professional credibility. Recertification demonstrates your continued commitment to BA excellence and helps you stand out as opportunities evolve.
Continuous Skill Currency
The BA profession evolves rapidly. CDU activities expose you to new methodologies — Agile BA, data analytics, AI-driven process modelling — keeping your toolkit current.
Global Credibility
An active CCBA signals expertise and commitment. It is recognized across industries and geographies, giving you leverage in multinational projects and cross-border roles.
IIBA Community Access
Maintain full access to IIBA's member network, exclusive research, webinar libraries, local chapter events, and peer collaboration opportunities worldwide.
Client & Employer Trust
Organisations requesting CCBA-certified consultants often specify that credentials must be active. Lapsed certification can disqualify you from high-value contracts.
Structured Learning Discipline
The CDU requirement creates a rhythm of intentional learning — from courses and conferences to mentoring and volunteering — building well-rounded expertise over time.
Recertification Requirements
To renew your CCBA, you must accumulate a minimum of 60 Continuing Development Units (CDUs) over your three-year certification cycle, and submit your application before your expiry date.
Types of Continuing Development Units
CDUs are earned across these categories. A balanced portfolio across these categories makes for the strongest application — and the most meaningful professional development.
-
Category 1 — Professional Development
Up to 30 CDUsStructured learning that directly relates to business analysis. Includes IIBA-endorsed courses - classroom course/virtual online course, conferences (e.g. BBC, IRM), formal university programs, in-house BA training, and webinars from accredited providers. 1 hour of learning typically equals 1 CDU.
-
Category 2 — Work History – Professional work experience
Up to 25 CDUsBA work that is aligned with the domains in the BABOK Guide. 200 hours of business analysis work experience = 1 CDU
-
Category 3 — Professional Activities
Up to 30 CDUs· Authoring & Publishing Articles
· Author/co-author of books on content aligned to BABOK
· Speaking/Moderation engagement in conference/workshops
· Content development for structured learning program -
Category 4 — Volunteer Service
Up to 30 CDUsContributing to the BA community through IIBA chapter leadership (Board/Committee member/Volunteer for IIBA/IIBA chapter), mentoring aspiring BAs, volunteering with a non-employer community or charitable group, participating in a formal IIBA-led initiative that awards CDUs. Reflects the reciprocal spirit of the profession.
-
Category 5 — Self-Directed Learning
Up to 15 CDUsIndependent professional growth activities: online courses, reading BABOK v3, industry books, BA-focused articles, listening to podcasts, or watching instructional videos. Requires self-reporting and brief documentation of what was learned. 1 hour of activity = 1 CDU
-
Category 6 — Formal Academic Education
Up to 30 CDUsPrograms offered by an accredited post-secondary institution for degree or diploma credit/Academic Courses. 3 hours of
academic course = 1 CDU
Pro tip: Track CDUs as you earn them using the IIBA’s online portal—don’t wait until year three, when documenting activities retroactively can be time-consuming and risky. Submit your recertification application up to 90 days before or within one year after your certification expiry, and retain evidence of all CDU activities for three years in case of an IIBA audit.
Recertification Fees
IIBA membership status determines your recertification fee. Member pricing offers a significant saving, making sustained membership a financially sensible strategy for CCBA holders.

IIBA annual membership fees = $155 USD/year for Region-1. Over a 3-year cycle, the total cost of maintaining your CCBA as a member (membership + recertification) is approximately $240 USD — a fraction of the salary premium the credential commands.
