IIBA Recertification:

Requirements for All 7 Certifications

CDU Requirements, Cycles, Fees & How to Renew — Straight from the Latest IIBA Recertification Handbooks

Earning an IIBA certification is a milestone — keeping it active is an ongoing commitment. Most IIBA certifications must be renewed on a fixed cycle by earning Continuing Development Units (CDUs) and paying a recertification fee, which proves your business analysis skills stay current. But the rules differ by certification: some renew every three years, the specialty credentials renew annually, and two credentials don't require recertification at all.

This guide summarizes the recertification requirements for all 7 IIBA certifications — ECBA, CCBA, CBAP, CBDA, CPOA, AAC, and CCA — based on IIBA's official Recertification Handbooks.

Always confirm the finer details in the handbook for your specific credential, as IIBA updates its policies periodically.

What is a CDU?

Continuing Development Units Explained

A Continuing Development Unit (CDU) is IIBA's measure of approved learning and professional activity. As a rule of thumb, one hour of structured, planned learning or qualifying professional activity equals one CDU, and you can record fractions down to quarter-hour (0.25) increments. You log CDUs yourself in IIBA's online BA Development Log through the My IIBA portal. You don't submit proof when you apply — but if you're selected for audit, you'll need documentation, so keep records for three years after each cycle. Note that entries can't be edited after 7 days, and activities completed before you earned the credential don't count.

How to earn CDUs

Six Categories That Qualify

IIBA recognizes several categories of CDU-earning activity. Across the recertification handbooks, qualifying activities include:

  • Professional development / training — Courses, webinars, and workshops aligned to the BABOK Guide (or the relevant specialized guide). Endorsed Education Provider (EEP) courses are pre-assessed and qualify automatically; other providers' courses can qualify if they meet IIBA's criteria (moderated, measurable learning objectives, interactive).
  • Work experience — Hours spent performing business analysis work aligned to the Knowledge Areas or domains.
  • Professional activities — Serving as a panel member, moderator, speaker, writing articles in journals or in similar roles (e.g., 5 CDUs for moderating or serving on a conference panel).
  • Volunteer service — Volunteering with IIBA chapters or the broader profession.
  • Self-directed learning — Reading, research, and independent study aligned to the BABOK Guide.
  • Formal academic education — Degree-credit courses in business analysis started after certification (a 15-credit course can equal 15 CDUs).

All CDU activities must align to the BABOK Guide Knowledge Areas — or, for specialized credentials, to that certification's specific domains (e.g., only Business Data Analytics domains count for CBDA).

Recertification Details for Each Credential

ECBA recertification

The ECBA does not require recertification. It's a situation-based certificate that is valid for life, with no CDUs or renewal fees — so once you pass, it's yours to keep. (You only re-engage with IIBA if you pursue a higher certification later.)

CCBA recertification

CCBA holders must earn 60 CDUs every 3 years and pay the recertification fee to maintain the credential. Log your CDUs in the BA Development Log before your maintenance due date. If you also hold CBAP, you don't recertify CCBA separately — completing your CBAP recertification automatically renews your CCBA on the same term dates.

CBAP recertification

CBAP holders must earn 60 CDUs every 3 years and pay the recertification fee. To recertify you need active IIBA membership status (recommended for the fee discount), active CBAP status, your 60 logged CDUs, and payment. Because CBAP is senior-level, most active practitioners accumulate 60 CDUs through normal work, training, and community involvement without extra effort. Recertifying CBAP also covers CCBA if you hold both.

CBDA recertification

The CBDA renews on an annual cycle: 20 CDUs every 1 year, with a minimum of 10 CDUs in each of two streams (learning activities and applying/giving-back activities), plus the recertification fee. Only Business Data Analytics domains count toward CBDA CDUs — activities must align to the Guide to Business Data Analytics and related IIBA data-analytics publications.

CPOA recertification

The CPOA (Certificate in Product Ownership Analysis) does not require recertification and is valid for life — no CDUs, no renewal fee.

AAC recertification

The IIBA-AAC (Agile Analysis Certification) renews annually: 20 CDUs every 1 year, with a minimum of 10 CDUs in each of the two streams, plus the recertification fee. AAC CDU activities must align to the Agile Extension to the BABOK Guide.

CCA recertification

The CCA (Certificate in Cybersecurity Analysis) does not require recertification and is valid for life — no CDUs, no renewal fee.

What happens if you don't recertify?

Suspension, Reinstatement & Reapplying

If you miss your recertification deadline, your credential moves into suspended status. During suspension you cannot use the designation, and you may be removed from the IIBA certification registry. You can typically reinstate within a defined window by earning the required CDUs, paying the fee, and submitting your application — contact certification@iiba.org to arrange reinstatement. If you let it lapse beyond the allowed period, reinstatement is no longer possible and you'll have to reapply and retake the exam from scratch.

The lesson: track CDUs throughout your cycle rather than scrambling at the end. If a genuine hardship prevents you from recertifying, IIBA's Extenuating Circumstance Policy may allow an extension.

FAQ on IIBA Recertification

Q: How often do I need to recertify my IIBA certification?

It depends on the credential. CCBA and CBAP recertify every 3 years (60 CDUs each cycle). The specialized certifications — CBDA and AAC — recertify annually (20 CDUs per year). ECBA, CPOA and CCA are situation-based certificates that do not require recertification.

Q: How many CDUs do I need for IIBA recertification?

CCBA and CBAP require 60 CDUs every 3 years. CBDA, CPOA, and AAC require 20 CDUs every 1 year, with a minimum of 10 CDUs in each of two activity streams. ECBA and CCA require none.

Q: Do ECBA and CCA require recertification?

No. Both ECBA and CCA are knowledge-based certificates and are valid for life — there are no CDU requirements or renewal fees for either.

Q: What is a CDU?

A Continuing Development Unit (CDU) is IIBA's measure of professional development. Generally, one hour of structured learning or qualifying professional activity equals one CDU, recorded in fractions down to quarter-hour increments in your IIBA BA Development Log.

Q: How do I earn CDUs for recertification?

Through professional development courses, business analysis work experience, professional activities (like speaking or moderating), volunteer service, self-directed learning, and formal academic education — all aligned to the BABOK Guide or your certification's specific domains.

Q: What happens if I don't recertify on time?

Your credential enters suspended status, during which you can't use the designation and may be removed from the IIBA registry. You can reinstate within a set window by completing CDUs and paying the fee; beyond that, you must reapply and retake the exam.

Q: I hold both CCBA and CBAP. Do I recertify both?

No. You only recertify CBAP. Once your CBAP recertification is complete, your CCBA is renewed automatically and follows the CBAP term dates.

Q: Do I need to submit proof of my CDUs?

Not at the time of application. You only provide documentation if you're selected for audit, so keep records of all CDU activities for three years after each recertification cycle.

Q: How much does IIBA recertification cost?

Recertification fees vary by certification and membership status and are set by IIBA.
