If you own and run a business, you have to pick up a lot of skills along the way. In addition to being able to provide the main service of your business, whether it’s selling a product or doing something for a customer, you also have to handle your bookkeeping, manage your employees, and be organized enough to meet your deadlines.

In some cases, you can outsource certain tasks to other people to fill in the gaps in your abilities. But how can you improve your other skills as a business owner?

Communication

Operating a business does involve a lot of different tasks, but one thing is present in every industry. You must be able to form relationships and work with others to complete a task. Even if you’re a sole trader, you still need to be able to make sales, communicate with customers, and sometimes deal with vendors and other businesses.

All of this requires the ability to make people like you or at least respect and trust you. You also need to be able to be clear with people. If your customer thinks they’re buying one thing and you deliver something completely different because your product description was misleading or incomplete, that customer isn’t going to be happy.

The same applies to your employees or other businesses that you work with, such as vendors. If you aren’t able to communicate your needs and expectations, then people can’t deliver what you want. Good communication equals higher productivity, happier and more competent employees, better customer satisfaction, and more profit.

Financial Skills

When starting a business, you may need the financial backing of lending agents or shareholders to get your business off the ground or to make improvements and investments.

Understandably, these people don’t just want to throw their money into a financial black hole. This is where good communication comes into play. Typically, you will need a business plan in place that outlines how much money you need, why you need it, how it will benefit your business, and how your company will earn more money.

In some cases, it’s beneficial to outsource your business and personal finances to an accountant or a bookkeeper. But even so, it’s still good to make sure that you’re financially literate.

Organizational Skills

One of the most essential life skills that translates well to business is your ability to organize your time and your energy. We only have so many hours in the day, and good organization and time management are kind of like investing your time.

You might spend an hour or so organizing your week and planning your schedule. But this will save you hours of wasted time and procrastination, especially if you’re trying to work out which project to work on next. Instead, you can get right to work and do what needs to be done without worrying about other things.

This also means that you won’t let any projects or clients fall by the wayside. If your business is poorly organized, it doesn’t come across as very professional. You might miss deadlines or make mistakes because you didn’t have a good workflow ready.

So, spend some time planning what you will do in advance. Use organizational tools and software to help with this and to save even more time. After all, time is money.

Flexibility

Flexibility isn’t so much a skill as a quality, and it might seem to contradict the whole point of being organized. However, an organized person can be more flexible because they’re more aware of what can be shifted and what is non-negotiable.

For example, if you suddenly get a massive order, an organized person might already have things in play that allow you to get working more quickly. You might be able to move certain projects around to meet your new deadlines, and because you’ve saved time before, you have more time to play around with them.

While flexibility is more of a quality, it can be built upon and improved. If you are ready in the planning phase, you can switch gears much more smoothly. Always be sure to give yourself some wiggle room, and you’ll be able to pivot around obstacles and take advantage of opportunities.
